'When all else fails, your why will keep you going.
A note from our Founder, Sheree Rubinstein.
The other day I was sitting in a cafe opposite the owner of the cafe who was sitting at a table on his laptop eating a bagel and drinking a coffee (probably trying to catch just a short moment to himself!). His wife and son walked in to the cafe. His son was probably about five years old. He ran straight up to his dad and said “Dad why are you working?”
I was eagerly awaiting his father’s response. Why ARE you working dad? How will you explain this to your son?
His response “I am working now son so that I don’t have to work later.”
It struck me. Is that why we work? Work hard, crazy hours in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and probably 60s so that you don’t have to work in your 70s?! Surely that doesn’t stack up.
I looked at Dad and I wondered what truly motivates you to get out of bed every single morning and go to work? Surely it’s not the idea of retirement one day in the distant future?!
What about passion? What about purpose? What about making a difference in the world no matter how big or small. Maybe he is motivated to make the best damn bagel on the planet. A cream cheese tomato bagel can really make a person’s day. Well it definitely makes my day :)
This week we have been thinking about passion and purpose. One of our Dedicated Members, Cristina De Medrano, gave a TED Talk in Barcelona “From Passion to Purpose”; seeking to help people reach their goals, find their path to their purpose, and bring it into their personal and professional lives. Cristina’s personal story of triumph following a sporting injury, and a complete career change, provide a thoroughly engaging and inspiring story.
Your ‘Why’ is so important to what you do. It’s your driving force. It’s what gets you out of bed every morning and gets you excited for the day. I am sure you will have listened to Simon Sinek’s TED Talk on How Great Leaders Inspire Action. And, if not, you should! They all start with their ‘why.’ “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it”. They buy your story, how you personally connect and resonate with the product or service.
Of course people work hard to make money and to live life for themselves and their families. Of course people work hard to be the best in their field, to build the best products and services. Of course sometimes people work hard because they want to prove something to themselves and others and they don’t want to disappoint people around them. But if you work tirelessly without having passion, purpose, a why in what you do, you will struggle your way through. Without a sense of connection and purpose to what you do, when it all gets too hard (and that will happen many times over in business), you will just want to give up.
At the end of the day It’s passion and purpose that will keep you going with a smile on your face when it all feels too hard and you want to bury your head in the sand. Let’s be honest, we all know just how real the struggle can be!
